This collection of photographs and graphics was contributed by Howard Openlander in 2009, when he moved from the New Eastside to Phoenix. Howard grew up on the Southwest side of Chicago and graduated from Linbloom High School in 1954. H worked as an electrician, and lived in Palos Heights from 1965 until moving to our New Eastside in 2002. We wish him well in his Phoenix retirement, and thank him for sharing his valuable collection. Many of the photographs were obtained from the Chicago Historical Society, and we thank that fine community resource for helping our citizens understand the history of their very unique New Eastside home.

Please note that the Federal Government did not have money requested by Illinois to finance the canal , so the federal government designated every other square mile for sale to raise the funds necessary for the canal.
However, the Canal Commissioners reserved the lakefront land between Madison and Park Place (11th) to be kept open, clear, and free of any buildings, or any obstruction whatsoever.
That includes the Chicago Children's Museum building.
